Background
Congenital heart disease is one of the major causes of mortality and morbidity in the pediatric population of both the developing and developed countries. Tamil Nadu is one State with acute cases of children with such diseases, accounting for 1.2% of the State’s population. This healthcare project will help these children to lead a better life, cured of the disease and contribute to the development of the nation.
Sensing the need and demand for such surgeries and to help the children of Tamil Nadu lead a healthy life, Rotary Club of Madras South has embarked on a major healthcare project to offer free open-heart surgeries to children with congenital heart diseases.
The children come from below the poverty line section of the society and from all over Tamil Nadu. These children are typically in the hospital for 5-7 days and discharged to go home.

Over the two years (2017-2019), about 225 children from the below the poverty line section of the society, with congential heart disease, are offered the surgery free of cost.
