Education is the key to everything. With education, you create, invent and discover the wonders of this vast universe. Every child has a basic and fundamental right to receive an education without discrimination. Nothing in the world should come between a child and their access to quality education. Inclusive education is one such space where every child gets to learn. Inclusion in education refers to all students being able to access and gain equal opportunities to education and learning. It is a place where specially abled children get to learn alongside their friends who are also privileged to be a part of a special kid’s world. It is a two way learning process that provides them with a different perspective and access to the best of both worlds. Rotarian Mukund and I have travelled more than thousand kilometres for the Freedom through education project helmed by the Rotary Club of Madras South. We considered many parameters to implement the project in the respective schools that had been selected. These included an excellent management, good faculty, hygiene and well maintained projects. A community assessment was done for all the schools and funds were raised as the schools were deemed to have cleared the selection criteria. The school’s students and parent’s views were also taken into consideration to understand if they were happy and had any concerns. In eight of the schools, we have implemented inclusive education where children with autism, dyslexia, ADHD and down syndrome can be supported very well. All credit goes to the teachers who have a herculean task of training and supporting these promising children. The schools involved were Bala Mandir, Maduram Narayan Centre, Padma Subramanian Bala Bhavan, Saraswathy Vidhyalaya, Sir and M, Venkata Subbarao and Sir and lady Venkata Subbarao institutions.
